"We have trailers with weapons of mass destruction chemical suits and medical equipment ready to haul, but we had no way to tow them," Lee said. For example, the medical examiner has a mobile morgue and trailers that would need to be towed by a heavy-duty vehicle. San Francisco purchased the trucks and equipped them with the Rumbler in case the need arose to haul equipment through city streets during a disaster. California agencies were free to use the Rumbler as of December 2007. Californians are just now getting a taste because of more stringent vehicle codes concerning light output and sound that had to be addressed. The Rumblers are being tested or used in a few cities across the country, including New York, Washington, D.C., and Elk Grove, Calif. The low-frequency tone can penetrate and shake solid materials, allowing anyone nearby to actually feel the sound waves and perhaps even witness their rearview mirror shake. It's not an overwhelming violent shaking, but a subtle feeling like a freight train kind of a rumbling."Īccording to manufacturer specifications, the Rumbler interacts with 100/200-watt siren amplifiers and provides a secondary, low-frequency tone. ![]() That alone gets attention, but then you will actually feel it. It mimics the tone but it's done at a much lower hertz level. "It just provides a contrast to the typical high-frequency siren. "It's an additional tool to combat distracted drivers, whether they have the stereo on, air conditioning, cell phones or general ambient noise," Sanchez said. The list price for the whole shebang is $685, according to Carlee Sanchez, senior district sales manager for Federal Signal. Now San Francisco has two 2008 Ford F-450s equipped with the Rumbler, which consists of a slave amplifier, a timer that's activated when the driver taps the horn, two speakers that operate like subwoofers and a mounting bracket. That day Lee knew the Rumbler would work as needed during a crisis. If it had been a regular siren, people would have pulled in front of me like, 'What do you want?' but everyone got out of the way." They were stopping to see what was going on. "Cross traffic was at a standstill as I went back to City Hall. ![]() "I'm watching people two and three blocks ahead of me, frozen with their hands covering their ears," Lee said. ![]() On went the siren, red and blue lights flashing, and then the unique feature of the Rumbler - the high-output speaker and subwoofers bounced low-frequency sound waves off buildings and vehicles. We haven't heard anything yet regarding the Rumbler's effect on vibration-sensitive car alarms, or backlash from neighborhoods roused from sleep by passing Rumbler vibrations. He tapped his horn, activating the Rumbler. Intended to penetrate solid objects (e.g., closed car windows or the chest cavity of a pedestrian) and overrun ambient noise-makers (car audio systems and iPods), or to physically get the attention of elderly drivers, the Rumbler does call to mind " brown noise," a semi-mythical ultra-low-frequency tone purportedly employed as a weapon during World War II (and as a modern-day crowd dispersant) that prompts the listener's anal sphincter to relax causing him or her to, um, lose control. As a traditional siren is heard, the Rumbler is felt. Fittingly dubbed The Rumbler, the siren (above right) consists of a pair of subwoofers that produce low-frequency tones complementary to the familiar high-pitched wail. ![]() Gaining momentum with police departments nationwide, including New York, Washington, and Chicago is a new kind of siren, one that promises to get the attention of even the most oblivious of motorists.

None of the singles, the Los Angeles Times noted, charted on Billboard’s Hot 100. Many of the tracks are comments on the contemporary political hailstorm-one song was a response to the #MeToo movement, and another was about Trump’s anti-immigration policies. She recorded her most recent album, “Amidst the Chaos,” in 2019, with the storied producer T Bone Burnett. ![]() The sitcom “Girls5eva,” created by the team behind “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” pokes inventive fun at one-hit-wonder girl bands. It’s the story of a woman who’s abused by her husband and finds solace in baking. Before her performance in “Into the Woods” came her work as the songwriter for the musical “ Waitress,” which ran for more than fifteen hundred performances. ![]() Is it always ‘or’? Is it never ‘and’?”Īs a result, Bareilles has stealthily made her mark in more varied ways, burrowing into more vital places in the culture than Apple Music’s Pop Hits Radio. As the Baker’s Wife sings after her tryst, “Why not both instead? There’s the answer, if you’re clever. . . . But she also continues to put out increasingly complex albums. She has written the score for a Broadway show and starred in a sitcom. I mean, there’s nothing to see.” She wanted to open up to different creative challenges and invitations. “I’m not that interested in being that interesting. She never truly yearned to be a pop star: “My first record came up next to Katy Perry, and it’s, like, a totally different thing.” “I’m not that interesting in that way,” she says. She says now that this was not really her. Her chestnut hair was in braids, and she wore a flowery shirt. “Piano-based pop soul, I guess,” Bareilles answered, in a voice so soft you have to lean in to hear it. During a video interview at the time of “Love Song,” with the Daily Mirror of London, the interviewer asked the hot new singer to describe her musical style. “Love Song” and “Brave” went triple platinum. During those years, Bareilles was often compared with Taylor Swift, another singer-songwriter bringing a similar message to the mass market: that sensitive young women would no longer be suckers. You can turn a phrase into / a weapon or a drug.” You know you remember them.īut there was always another side to her. She will forever be the slightly angsty girl with the long brown hair hatching earworms from her piano: “I’m not gonna write you a love song / ’Cause you asked for it / ’Cause you need one.” And: “You can be amazing. For pop listeners now moving into their thirties, she’ll remain best known as the singer-songwriter of two monster hits, “Love Song,” from 2007, and “Brave,” from 2013. But, whether that comes to pass or not, Bareilles, who is forty-two, will doubtless stay an unusual sort of bisected celebrity. Listen to her delicate stop-and-start argument with herself in her apologia of the tryst, “Moments in the Woods.”Ī Tony nomination seems a strong possibility. You can pick her out among all the amazing singers-the slightly earthier mezzo-soprano timbre and the soaring notes when she opens things up, a bit of pop fizz seeping from under the cap. Her sound, in a cast gifted with extraordinary voices, is remarkable. I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love Bareilles’s performance in “Into the Woods.” On the stage, in the show’s many ensemble numbers, Bareilles is like a human playfully hiding in a Disney World skit and, at the same time, a spritely presence peeking out in a game of guess-who’s-the-pop-star. ![]() She is the relatable focus of a show where every other character is a cultural icon. After her wishes come true, she finds life with a baker and an infant boring, and hooks up with a prince, then sings of her sort-of regret. ![]() She desperately wants a child, and once she has one, understandably, she wants a bigger house in which to raise him. She’s skeptical, hurt, and a bit bitter, like a character in a Paula Fox novel. It’s a role that’s passed like a crown from one talented actress to the next. She is currently starring in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “ Into the Woods.” In the musical, she plays the Baker’s Wife, a part that Joanna Gleason-who played the wife when the show débuted on Broadway, in 1987-first made famous, and that Imelda Staunton and Amy Adams later performed. The black woodpecker is a fairly widely distributed woodland species and can successfully breed in most areas where extensive woodland is left. After 18 to 35 days, the young black woodpeckers will leave the nest, staying with the adults for another week. The nestlings may fight their way to the entrance of the nest in order to be fed first. The breeding pair take it in turns to incubate the eggs, also sharing duties of feeding and brooding the chicks once they have hatched. The nest hole is usually dug in a live poplar or pine tree. When the nest is ready, the female lays a single clutch of two to eight eggs, the average being four to six. It not only provides habitats for other species, but also controls populations of wood-boring insects, helping to protect the trees. The black woodpecker's excavations provide homes for many other species of bird and mammal, and is therefore considered to be a "keystone" species in many of its habitats throughout its range. Once a hole has been made, the black woodpecker chips downwards through the trunk of the tree, creating a nesting chamber, the only lining being the woodchips created throughout the process. The woodpecker will more than likely choose for its nest a tree with a fungal disease, such as heart rot, although some will utilise a living, healthy tree. In order to position itself correctly, it has short, stumpy legs, as well as long, sharp claws and very stiff tail feathers. Due to the size of its bill and large size and great physical power of this bird, it can access prey fairly deep within a tree. Like all woodpeckers, this species has a specially adapted neck containing very strong muscles, which allow it to endlessly hack away at tree bark. The selection of foods is relatively predictable, narrow and consistent in this species. The woodpecker feeds by using its bill to hammer on dead trees to dig out carpenter ants and wood-boring beetle grubs. Approximately 80 sightings of the species in the UK have been reported, but some of these are disputed, though the proximity of the British Isles to the species' range in Western Europe means that the species may cross over on a regular basis. The black woodpecker is noticeably absent from the British Isles. This species has been observed at elevations between 100 and 2,400 m (330 and 7,870 ft). It is more likely to occur in marginal woods near human habitations during the non-breeding season. It is very widespread throughout mountainous and lowland forests. The black woodpecker is mainly found in forested regions, with a preference for extensive, mature woodland, including coniferous, tropical, subtropical and boreal forests. The species is generally more uncommon and more discontinuous in distribution in the Asian part of its range. The southern limits of this woodpecker's range are in Spain and Italy, and it has also been recorded as a vagrant in Portugal. It is also native to parts of Asia, including Korea, Japan and China, and to the Middle East, including Iran and Kazakhstan. The range of the black woodpecker spreads east from Spain across the whole of Europe, excluding Great Britain, Ireland, and northern Scandinavia. Unlike other woodpecker species, the black woodpecker does not have a dipping, bounding flight, but instead flies with slow, unsteady-seeming wing beats with its head raised. The other is a screech-like shrill while in flight. One is a short single high-pitched note, a loud, whistling kree-kree-kree, done only twice in a row. Their voice is remarkable in that it has two different calls. The piercing yellow eyes and manic, high-pitched calls of the black woodpecker have made it the villain of fairy tales throughout its range. ![]() The juvenile black woodpecker is similar but is less glossy, with a duller red crown and a paler grey throat and bill. In males, the entire crown is red, but in females only the top hindcrown is red, with the rest of the body all black. The plumage of this crow-sized woodpecker is entirely black apart from a red crown. The closely related pileated and white-bellied woodpeckers also broadly overlap in size with the black woodpecker, but both are somewhat smaller in average and maximal size and mass. It is easily the largest woodpecker in its range and is second in size only to the great slaty woodpecker amongst the woodpecker species certain to exist (with the likely extinction of the largest and second largest woodpeckers), although its average mass is similar to that of the Magellanic woodpecker of South America. ![]() ![]() Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 22.7 to 26 cm (8.9 to 10.2 in), the tail is 15.9 to 17.3 cm (6.3 to 6.8 in), the very long bill is 5 to 6.7 cm (2.0 to 2.6 in) and the tarsus is 3.6 to 4 cm (1.4 to 1.6 in). Body weight is approximately 250 to 400 g (8.8 to 14.1 oz) on average. The black woodpecker measures 45 to 55 cm (18 to 22 in) long with a 64 to 84 cm (25 to 33 in) wingspan. ![]() As the swelling starts to dissipate, it is common for clients to switch to a smaller garment that fits better.
